C-wire, known as the common wire, it can provide continuous power for the Smart / Wi-Fi thermostats for cooling or heating system. The furnaces and air conditioning systems in many homes, especially older ones, normally have very limited installation condition, tend to exclude the C-wire.
For installation without C-wire, we would like to recommend the E-Top’s Battery Thermostat which can use battery power directly instead of getting power from the common wire. For the WiFi enabled thermostat, we will must need the C-wire available at the site installation.
It takes below steps to replace your old thermostat with a E-Top smart thermostat:
1. Turn off power supply
For your safety, turn off power at the breaker box or switch off powers at your furnace/boiler or air conditioning.
Note: Please take take care that turning off your thermostat won't turn off the power to the furnace or heating equipment.
2. Verify your system is off
Try adjusting your thermostat’s temperature setting, if you don’t feel the system running within 3 minutes, the power has been cut off directly.
Note: For some special thermostat logic such as pump delay, please make sure you have passed the delay timer.
3. Remove your existing thermostat
Take thermostat off wall plate but leave wires connected.
4. Look for a wire in the C-Terminal on the wall plate
