Picture this: you’ve just finished wiring up an entire floor of new thermostats. You boot up the Building Management System (BMS), wait for the network to populate, and... half the devices randomly drop offline. It’s a massive headache. While BACnet remains the undisputed king of commercial HVAC communication, the MS/TP physical layer relies on a traditional RS485 serial bus. That means it is incredibly unforgiving when it comes to field wiring quirks.

It sounds basic, but physical wiring trips up more technicians than anything else. RS485 pushes differential signals across two main wires (usually marked as A and B, or D+ and D-).
On an MS/TP network, devices pass a "token" around to take turns talking. For this to work smoothly, every single controller on that specific wire run must agree on the speed.
Every node needs a unique identity. On a standard BACnet MS/TP subnet, master devices typically use MAC addresses between 1 and 127. What happens if two units share address "45"? Total chaos. They will both try to grab the token at the exact same millisecond. The BMS will usually display them aggressively bouncing between online and offline states. Keeping a precise commissioning spreadsheet is your best defense here.
Electricity acts a bit like water in a pipe. If a signal travels down a really long wire (say, pushing past 1,000 feet) and hits a dead end, it splashes back. This reflection scrambles the incoming data. By terminating the chain with a 120-ohm End-of-Line (EOL) resistor at the very first and very last device, you effectively absorb that splash. Just remember: never put a resistor in the middle of the run.
